Buying T-Shirts as a fundraiser for the site? Current bandwidth is about 50 gigs a month (thats with these forums being hosted on a non-pay server (Gagames)), and those of you who run websites know how expensive that gets.

Sanfam and I are considering several designs, such as one with the S14 logo on a breast pocket, and on the pack words saying "I fought for" Then the ItF logo, followed by the FirstOnes logo. Don't have an estimate on costs or anything, just need a general estimate on if it would be worth the production cost to create them. I would have to pre-confirm the number of orders first too, before I went and got them printed. Estimate on cost would probably be about 20 bucks US, with maybe 6-7 of that being the profit.

I am also working on putting together some kind of commemorative picture CD about our efforts, our story, and all of you. That idea's still fuzzy too, and I am waiting to hear back from Rick and Randy about how much of the "full story" we would be allowed to tell...

Let me know...

Depends on how much shipping would cost. Thats alot of money to spend on a T-shirt.

20 US ought to cover shipping.... am counting on paying about 10 bucks canadian for the shirts, then 6-8 bucks shipping.

20 US ought to cover shipping....

Yeah - the number of colors on the transfer and number of shirts you order will determine the price. For a rough guide, In my final undergrad days at WPI (which would mean 1990-1991), the local AIAA chapter had t-shirts printed with a 1-color transfer on less expensive gray t-shirts. The break-even price for the 4-5 dozen or more shirts they ordered was almost $20, and that didn't include shipping.

You might want to decide on the number of colors for the transfer, the size of the transfer (X by Y inches) and the type of blank shirt you'd like, then go to a few places that handle stuff like this and ask them for the per-unit prices if you'd order the number of shirts you'll expect to sell.

Like Rick said, though, you'll probably need to get permission to do this from whoever owns the rights to and controls licensing for items related to Into the Fire and Babylon 5, since you'll be selling the shirts to raise money for your site (which means you'll have to make a profit in the sales).

You may want to look into CafePress (www.cafepress.com) I would explain more, but it may just be easier to go there and see what they offer. The only trouble is one of copyright -If you can leave out trademarked WB material, there would most likely be no problem.

Thing is, like has been said, without permission anything that has/has had to do with B5 (even Into The Fire) might be a copyright breach in some way. Just so that you know that IF you should want anything with B5 in it then try and get the permission and should it be that you are denied that I will suggest that only the "Firstones" and/or "Sector 14 Studios" logo/s are used, 'cause are you gonna get sued by them http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/tongue.gif http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/wink.gif

Personally, I would buy and wear a t-shirt only if there isn't anything (sorry to say this) ridiculous "I fought for ITF..bla bla bla" or "Remember...bla bla bla...". I would personally want it clean with only the logo. -Will appear more cool methinks. Or even Aardvarks. Yeah, I kid you not http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/biggrin.gif http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/biggrin.gif Anyway, I would buy the T-shirt no matter what to show my support!

The most I'd expect you to pay for shipping is just over $3 per shirt - standard USPS 2nd-day mailing. You can get cheaper than that for standard package rate shipping.

It's the shirts that will cost more than you'd expect to see in stores, especially since I'm guessing it would need to include some profit (since DraziGuy mentioned it would be to pay for FirstOnes hosting bills).

Ignoring the issues of having visitors indirectly pay for a site discussing or based on copyrighted material by buying shirts/caps, I'm wondering how high even a 1-color transfer t-shirt would cost, given material that won't dissolve in the first wash or three, especially with profit and shipping added on to that. I'd be surprised if the total wasn't near $25 per shirt or, at best, $20+.

Good luck, though http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif

Full color meaning how many colors? 2? 4?
8? 16?

Plus, you should make sure that the actual material used in the shirt is high enough of a quality and sewn together well enough so that it won't start to fall apart in the first dozen washes, the transfer fade or flake, or the shirt start to pill up or come apart at the seams.

I've seen that happen for some of the cheaper (and $18 is cheaper, when you're dealing with small orders of t-shirts with color transfers like that) shirts, including one I ordered back as an undergrad through our local AIAA chapter. Near-paper-thin material is another stunt pulled by these guys when you see cheap prices.

If you end up paying $20 plus $3 shipping plus a profit for FirstOnes, that will probably hit $25+ unless DraziGuy sets a small profit on the shirts (which probably won't even pay for a week of his hosting bill). That's a hefty bill for a single t-shirt.

The image on one of the shirts I have is more than 16 colours (I got bored of counting). They've been making them for a few years now, and switched printing processes after a while because the old process was flaking and stuff. However, they have the advantage of being able to order large numbers because of the large number they sell.
The material on their older shirts is 50% cotton 50% polyester, and feels very comfortable. I've only had the shirt three months so I don't know about wear, but someone I know has one two years old and it still looks good. I also have their most recent shirt, and it is 100% cotton, and feels more comfortable.
I'm not saying that is the way we should do ours, but there is no reason not to find out the cost.

Personally, I'd go with two colors only, just to make it cheaper:
Dark purple overall, with bright green images and text. I'd suggest a small aardvark siloette on the left breast of the shirt, possibly a pocket, and one of the S14S logos on the back (one of the b&w made into p&g). Either Large over the entire back, or small and just below the neck.
As for the quality, spare no expense. I wnat this thing to last, and definately NO FLAKING! I hate that.

I'd buy one.

I would love especially to be able to put a cd like that together... I am already campaigning to get Rick, Randy, Christy and everyone else who played a role to write their stories down... already started on mine. That would be the cheapest too.... buying CD's in bulk (which I do anyways) makes the cost less than a buck Canadian per CD. Shipping about 4 bucks canadian, printing the case slips, if I got it done pro would be about 20 cents a case. Might be worth it..

I only really suggest the T-Shirt idea cause I want to have one myself http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif Makes it cheaper for me to buy if I am also buying for 60 or a hundred of you as well http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif
