Yes that's right, I'm back, and very glad that all my projects are finished! Of course, I still have one to do over the holidays... anyone here know anything about lexical analysis?
Anyway... I did keep in touch with this place and one thing I noticed was a lot of off-topic posts. Since there is only one remaining active and it has evolved into a discussion about Space: Above and Beyond, I will leave it. But any more off-topic posts will be moved to the place where they are meant to be: the Zocalo.

Now back to business. http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif

Welcome back, Biggles. And thanks for another off-topic post!!! Heheh, just kidding. Glad your projects are sorted. Now we can gladly look forward to a Biggles post every other message!

Erm, I don't wanna sound picky with you, but why have you said this? How is SAAB anymore relevent than other off-topic threads to a forum for only B5:ITF? I hope it's not just because you *like* SAAB yourself.

Personally, I don't mind, not much is being posted right now, so if it's off-topic, yippie. At least it's something!!! http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif We're in a kinda quiet phase. *sniff*

Actually it's more an excuse because I'm too lazy, plus the topic seems to be quite popular with the developers and anything that gets them posting is good...

Bigs: it's nice to have you back, but what's your problem with off-topic posts?!
The other moderators don't feel that they have to remove them, so why do you? http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/shad.gif

P.S. sorry if this sours the atmosphere a little, but it just gets me a little angry.

Shuup Nick: Forum rules say they go in the Zocalo.

Lexical Analysis is a way of analysing and breaking down an input stream. It is used in making compilers.

Are you doing engineering or computer science?

I chose computer systems engineering over computer science because it gives me not just training in programming, but training in hardware design, low level programming, and absolutely heaps of training in problem solving, much more than computer science would, and I consider problem solving to be essential to programming.

Comp Sci... though they give us a bit of everything... I just sat a exam on comp arch and op systems... and had atotally internal programming and problem solveing course this simester as well... hopefully everything goes well for the rest of the year cos the first simester was a huge work load.... oh well I passed so I cant really complain http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif

Another Comp Sci major here....

I rather enjoyed Operating Systems and Architecture; same with Assembly. I like seeing what's going on at the lower levels.

'Course, for the Assembly course, we did half of it in Z80 assembly -- we made GameBoy games.

What year are you in?

We get to do a lot of more realistic, engineering problem solving stuff. Things like programming a DC motor controller in assembler, stuff like that. While I would like to make games and do the sort of problem solving the people across the road in the comp sci department do, this sort of problem solving is very useful for teaching about how systems work and stuff like that, which helps programming a great deal.
Besides, I learn all the comp sci type stuff at home in my spare time anyway. http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif

That sounds familiar...one of my college projects was designing a wing, programming the CNC machine to form it from an aluminum block, then test it in a wind tunnel to optimize the design and placement of wing and slat. Of all that, programming the CNC machine was the least fun http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif

What language? Some kind of assembler?
Our last project was a DC Motor controller in assembler, and that wasn't very fun. Useful to know how to do though. The current one is writing a compiler. It's going to be very very interesting I think.
