Actually, the reason blue appears as the color of the sky is due to Raliegh Scattering (sp?). Basically, blue has a tendnacy to scatter more then red due to its wavelength when in a diffuse medium such as the upper atmosphere (note, the lower atmosphere is too diffuse to scatter noticably). The wavelenths of red light (about 600-700nm) scatter less and thus are less diffuse at longer distances, which causes the sunset to be red.
